What's CLACAI?

CLACAI is a consortium made up of activists, researchers, heath care providers and other professionals that works toward reducing unsafe abortion in Latin America. Our goal is to increase access to information and safe, modern technologies that have the potential to improve the quality of abortion care while fully respecting women’s sexual and reproductive rights.

CLACAI’s history

The International Consortium for Medical Abortion (ICMA) meeting that took place in October 2004 in Johannesburg, South Africa, marked the beginning of CLACAI. A group of participants working in Latin America exchanged experiences and decided to join forces to better coordinate efforts underway to address unsafe abortion in the region. In August 2005, as part of the “Second Research Meeting on Unwanted Pregnancy and Unsafe Abortion” organized by the Population Council in Mexico City, several of these individuals, joined by others, met again and reaffirmed their decision to form CLACAI and elected the first Coordinating Committee.

In May 2006, 46 representatives from thirteen countries participated in CLACAI’s first general meeting in Lima, Peru. After much discussion, participants decided that CLACAI’s role in the fight against unsafe abortion was to promote access to innovative technologies that could improve the safety and quality of abortion care in the region.
